After working with the Cherokees in Oklahoma, as an officer in the Indian
Health Service, Dr. Kelly practiced at the Phoenix Indian Service Hospital
for Navajo and other western Native Americans. Dr. Kelly's next position
was with Our Lady of Guadalupe Neighborhood Health Clinic
near San Francisco. After
marrying, he joined a private practice in the Windham/Mansfield
area of Eastern Connecticut to be closer to family. He continues to
practice general pediatrics, newborn and adolescent medicine, including
asthma and allergy management, attention deficit disorder and school-related
issues in a group practice with Drs. Elliott, Gorin and Willenborg.
Dr.
Kelly has served as a member on many Windham Hospital committees (by
laws, utilization review, medical executive), as well as serving as Chief
of Pediatrics. He has testified twice before the Connecticut
State Legislature for the Connecticut Academy of Pediatrics and regularly
makes presentations to a variety of community organizations — school
parent associations, WTIC radio, WIC (women, infants and children) program
and groups of prenatal parents. Annually he organizes educational
programs for school nurses. He enjoys being the medical advisor
for local school systems (Ashford, Lebanon, Windham, Mansfield, Region
19 high school). As Assistant
Clinical Professor at the University of Connecticut Health Center (Farmington),
he mentors UConn medical students, providing medical care to those who
are served by the Coventry Soup Kitchen in Willimantic.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2006,
he volunteered with the Red Cross in New Orleans, home of Tulane University,
where he attended medical school, and where his daughter is a medical
student. In 1998 he received the American Academy of Pediatrics
Citation for his publication on Medicaid reimbursement.
Dr. Kelly enjoys
biking, running (including two marathons, the Chatham Race on Cape Cod
and Manchester, CT’s annual Thanksgiving Day race)
and vegetable gardening and plays trombone with the Woodstock Coronet
Band.
He and his wife have two daughters who
were educated in our local school systems. One has entered medical
school, and his younger daughter is completing her undergraduate English
literature and art history studies.
